In the Spring of 1999, the subject was Tea. Sandy and Erin brought a new business to downtown Springfield. They had each considered a hospitality business. After a brief discussion they set their sites on a tea room. It was agreed that the key to success would be good food, well prepared for a reasonable price. After viewing several locations, the owners settled on 618 South Main Street, a site rich in history. As luck would have it, part of that history was as a drugstore lunch counter!
Although the buildings most recent incarnation was a framing shop, 618 Main street is no stranger to Springfield’s restaurant scene. Built in 1913, this building has served many diverse functions (a jail cell, shooting gallery and women’s clothes shop among them), It is probably best remembered as the McCord and Harris Drug store.
McCord and Harris boasted a full soda fountain as well as sandwich counter. This tidbit of history has occasionally helped to inform choices for Burdett’s dining room layout and menu. Its always a treat to hear from our customers their memories about the drugstore or comparisons to it. |
